Call for Proposals: Report on the Thing
Submission Deadline: 4pm, May 30, 2025
Exhibition dates: July 3 鈥 26, 2025. Opening July 2 at 6PM
Attention all students at the School for the Contemporary Arts!
The Perel Committee at the Audain Gallery is seeking proposals from students from all areas of the School for artworks and projects that are produced in response to Clarice Lispector鈥檚 鈥楻eport on the Thing.鈥 This short text was originally titled 鈥極 relat贸rio da coisa,鈥 and was first published in her book (1974).
鈥楻eport on the Thing鈥 can be interpreted on many registers and gives rise to the potential for various interdisciplinary responses. While its central theme is categorization, it does not belong to any discipline. The text addresses the manner in which we organize and and understand things, yet things continually fall in and out of Lispector's rather unconventional categories. This understanding is not always rational as in the case of Sveglia, which is at once a brand of a measuring mechanism like a clock, a thing, and a category. While they are pretty much the same, in terms of what is Sveglia and what is not, Lispector asserts that 鈥榓s incredible as it might seem, Coca-Cola is, while Pepsi never was.鈥
鈥楻eport on the Thing鈥 is available online as a PDF .
