2024 Dhahan Prize for Punjabi Literature
On the evening of November 13, we cohosted a dialogue with the 2024 finalists of the Dhahan Prize for Punjabi Literature.
Attendees had the rare opportunity to meet authors from India and Pakistan while supporting diverse literature from around the world. WLL professor and FASS Associate Dean, Dr. Melek Ortabasi, facilitated the discussion. Authors Jinder and Surinder Neer discussed themes from their award-winning books, which encompass common 鈥淧unjabi taboos.鈥漈he title of this event was inspired by Surinder Neer鈥檚 book, 鈥楾aboo.鈥� Coincidentally, the word 鈥榯aboo鈥� fell neatly in-line with themes conveyed in Jinder鈥檚 books.
The discussion covered topics such as educating women on defending themselves in a traditional patriarchy, coping with new cultural norms while holding on to traditional values, and sacrificing self to survive in new countries.
The audience included members of the Pujabi community and SFU students from Dr. Kaur's Punajbi 100 language course.
The discussion was followed by a Q&A session and a book sale.
