Explanation |
A |
Excellent to Exceptional performance. Content, organization and style are exceptional, reflecting a sophisticated and complex understanding of the text. The thesis is provocative, allowing for a nuanced development of an engaging argument, clearly and forcefully written, and adroitly supported by the evidence. The sentences are forceful, elegant, and without error. Word choice is apt and felicitous. |
B |
Good to Very Good performance. The content, organization and style, while not exceptional, are solid, showing a competent understanding of the text. The thesis is clear and interesting, allowing for logical development of a sound argument, which is developed clearly and the points of which are reasonably well supported y the evidence. The sentences are well formed, with few errors. Word choice is functional, with no major errors. |
C |
Satisfactory performance. The content, organization, and style show an adequate, though not nuanced, understanding of the text. Neither thesis nor argument is especially interesting. Both could be clearer, and the logic of the argument is not as strong as it might be. The use of evidence is somewhat weak, operating more often as plot summary, though sufficient to make minimal case. There may be some serious errors at the level of sentence of word choice. |
D |
Unsatisfactory performance. The content, organization, and style show an inadequate or simplistic view of the text, and display serious flaws. The thesis is not satisfactory or non-existent, and does not allow for a properly developing argument. There are serious flaws in the logic of the essay. The use of evidence is poorly judged, either being off the mark, or constituting a list of support for a point not in great need of it, or merely plot summary. There are too many errors in the construction of sentences and/or in the choice of words. |
