MY JOURNEY
I am currently in my 4th year at the Beedie School of Business, and I am concentrating in Accounting and International Business.
My interest in business began in high school after taking an introductory business course, which introduced me to various aspects of the field. My fascination with accounting grew after taking Accounting 11 and 12, leading me to pursue a degree in Business Administration. I chose SFU Beedie for its abundant opportunities and resources to support my development as a business professional.
After completing BUS 251 and BUS 254 and receiving advice from senior students, I pursued my first co-op term in accounting, which confirmed my decision to concentrate in the field. Initially unsure of a second concentration, I found BUS 346 inspiring and chose international business to deepen my understanding of global markets.
MY SFU BEEDIE EXPERIENCE
I have been involved in the SFU Student Marketing Association (SMA) as a Finance & Operations Coordinator and later as Vice President (VP) of Finance & Operations. These roles gave me the opportunity to apply my accounting knowledge outside the classroom while developing leadership, decision-making, and time-management skills. As VP, I led a team, prepared financial reports, created budgets, and applied for grants, all of which helped me build connections within the Beedie community.
I have participated in the Community Volunteer Income Tax Program, assisting SFU community members with tax returns, and have been actively involved in SFU Beedie LAUNCH, where I have served as a leader for four years. This past year, I took on additional responsibilities as a Senior LAUNCH Leader. Helping first-year and transfer students transition into SFU Beedie has been incredibly fulfilling and has strengthened my leadership and communication skills.
Additionally, I have completed two accounting co-op terms at a Big Four accounting firm as a US tax analyst. These experiences solidified my decision to concentrate in accounting and allowed me to explore corporate tax projects in depth.
NEXT STEPS
I plan to complete my degree within the next few years while remaining actively involved in the SFU Beedie community. After graduation, I intend to work towards obtaining the Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation. In 5 – 10 years, I see myself actively pursuing a career in accounting, specifically in a tax-focused role.
