Master of Science in Finance
Understand the role of finance in business. This full-time program is based in downtown Vancouver and teaches you the fundamentals of finance, asset pricing, data analytics, investment banking, and private equity. But it’s not all theory. You’ll also be able to manage the Student Investment Advisory Service Fund, an investment portfolio with a market value of over $20 million CAD.

Curriculum
Our MSc Finance program is a full-time, 16-month program delivered over four terms, at the highest standard. It offers a wide selection of courses based on a foundation of financial theory and real-world experience. The curriculum consists of an online introductory component and four in-person semesters. All students take core finance courses in the first two semesters and are exposed to fundamental finance theory and practice, as well as learning practical programming skills in a language such as Python before moving into one of two streams: Investment Management or Research.

Academic Streams
The Investment Management stream focuses on financial instruments, financial markets and finance theory. The Research stream focuses on the strong quantitative skills and rigour required for a career in financial engineering or academia. For students interested in the optionality of continuing their studies after the MSc Finance, the Research stream courses provide credit when entering the SFU Beedie PhD program (these courses will have a minimum GPA requirement of 3.5).

Frederick Willeboordse, PhD
PhD (Tsukuba), MA (Amsterdam)
Academic Director
Frederick has two degrees from the University of Amsterdam in the Netherlands, and a Ph.D. in Theoretical/Computational Physics from the University of Tsukuba in Japan. Previously, he was a postdoc at the University of Tokyo and later a tenured Associate Professor at the National University of Singapore. Frederick owned an Apple retail shop in one of Hong Kong’s famous computer malls in the Sham Shui Po district, as well as an internet hosting and e-commerce business. Frederick has also been an active trader, first trading options in the 80s during his student days. Recently, he has mostly focused on algorithmic trading and runs a server in Chicago where he can test out research ideas in real time.
Ying Duan
PhD (Boston College)
Associate Professor, Finance
Ying Duan joined the Beedie School of Business in 2015. Ying holds a PhD in Finance from Boston College. She focuses her research on institutional investors, market efficiency, and corporate governance and has published in a number of leading academic journals, including the Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis, and Contemporary Accounting Research.
