Industry Projects

BCCAI has signed 12 new industry projects tackling critical challenges in agri-biotechnology, water management, irrigation, commodity shelf life and crop waste. These projects reduce the risks associated with developing and adopting high-potential agritech solutions through a 50/50 funding model, where industry partners contribute 50% of the project cost, matched by BCCAI. Below is a list of industry projects signed between February 2024 and 2025.

Cascadia Seaweed

Total project value: $131K ($48K cash from BCCAI; $48K cash and $35K in-kind from Cascadia)

Partners: KPU, SFU

Cascadia Seaweed partners with coastal First Nations to cultivate seaweed on sustainable ocean farms. Cascadia through this project will optimize seaweed extract dosage to enhance greenhouse crop yields and support regenerative agriculture. 

Maia Farms (project 1)

Total project value: $248K ($124K cash from BCCAI; $124K cash from Maia Farms)

Partners: National Research Council Canada, Kova Consulting Group Inc.

Maia Farms, a Vancouver-based company, has developed a patent-pending mushroom protein (mycoprotein) production technology by fermentation of Canadian broad-acre crop side streams, such as grain meals, pulp, and starches. They are addressing the growing demand for alternative protein with a commercially viable food ingredient made with revalorized agricultural feedstock and cutting-edge technology.

GreenSmart Technologies Inc.

Total project value: $98K ($48K cash from BCCAI; $48K cash and $1K in-kind from GreenSmart)

Partners: BCIT, Liquidseal B.V., Ocean Spray Cranberries

GreenSmart Technologies Inc., based in Surrey, operates at the forefront of agricultural innovation. GreenSmart is developing a natural, plant-based freshness seal coating to extend the shelf life of fresh cranberries and other crops.

Ocion Water Sciences (Project 1)

Total project value:$75K ($37.5K cash from BCCAI; $37.5K cash from Ocion)

Partners: S.J. Ritchie Research Farms Ltd., Canadian Poultry Consultants Ltd.

The project aims to optimize the use of copper to limit pathogenic bacteria and improve flock health. This will address a critical pain point for the poultry industry by providing a substitute for antibiotics to maintain flock health.

Takachar Limited

Total project value: $199K ($49.5K cash from BCCAI; $49.5K cash and $100K in-kind from Takachar).

Partners: Carbon Pilot Inc., Silvatec Consulting Ltd.

Takachar, a Salmon Arm-based biotech company, is developing a portable, low-cost system to convert biomass residues into products like biochar and biofuels, enabling rural BC communities to manage biomass and generate revenue.

C&T Mushroom Farm Ltd.

Total project value: $1.37M ($189K cash from BCCAI; $189K cash and $1M in-kind from C&T)

Partners: Foxy Produce, VNB Enterprise

C&T Mushroom Farm Ltd., headquartered in Langley, is a pioneer in vermicomposting – processing organic waste through earthworms. This project is piloting automated cow manure processing to produce organic fertilizers and diversify revenue streams for BC dairy farms.

 

ChamberTrust Management International Inc. (CTMI)

Total Project Value: $395K ($47K cash from BCCAI; $47K cash and $300K in-kind from CTMI)

Partners: Storm Computing

CTMI is focused on data management and IP ownership. CTMI is developing a high-security data system for the agritech sector with features like IP protection, auto-notarization, and private data uploads.

Maia Farms (Project 2)

Total project value: $83K ($41.5K cash from BCCAI; $41.5K cash from Maia Farms)

Partners: BioFoodTech, Dickinson – Wright

On their second project with BCCAI, Maia Farms is developing standard operating procedures (SOP) for regulatory compliance, commercial processing, and packaging optimization. The project will focus on conducting regulatory analysis to determine Health Canada's and the FDA's requirements. It will also develop an SOP for small-scale, food-safe mycelium processing and packaging.

Perkins&Wills Architects Co.

Total project value: $67K ($33.5K cash from BCCAI; $33.5K cash from Perkins & Will)

Partners: UFV

Perkins & Wills is a Vancouver-based architectural company that designs and constructs sustainable human-centered buildings. Perkins & Wills is developing modular designs for integrating urban farming and waste-to-resource systems in residential buildings, supported by a comprehensive knowledge report.

Ocion Water Sciences (Project 2)

Total project value:$109K ($59K cash from BCCAI; $38K cash and $10K in-kind from Ocion)

Partners: UBC

Ocion, a Surrey-based company that specializes in developing mineral-based products to treat agricultural and municipal wastewater, is evaluating CT11 in a field trial for commercialization as a manure treatment product to help dairy farmers meet GHG reduction goals.

Kahlon Farms

Total project value: $146K ($49K cash from BCCAI; $49K cash and $47K in-kind from Kahlon)

Partners: E.S. Crop Consult, BerriTech

 Kahlon Farms is a family-owned business with approximately 400 acres of land dedicated to berry production in the Fraser Valley. Kahlon is optimizing fertigation practices with drip irrigation to improve yield, quality, and production speed in berry farming.

Fresh4Sunset Farms Ltd.

Total project value: $339K ($212K cash from BCCAI; $127K cash from Fresh4Sunset)

Partners: Gill Labour Contracting Ltd, Cobalt Refrigerator

Fresh4Sunset Farms Ltd. is a glass greenhouse farming operation located in Delta. Fresh4Sunset is establishing a BC-based facility to produce beneficial insects for greenhouse biological control, reducing reliance on imports, shipping emissions, and costs while promoting sustainability.
