The Integrated Fisheries Ecology Lab in the School of Resource and Environmental Management is seeking an upper-level undergraduate or graduate Research Assistant to support Master of Resource Management (MRM) research that analyses the efficacy of commercial chum fishery closure in the Central Coast of British Columbia. More information on this research project can be found . To support this analysis, this position will help coalesce a large dataset that includes annual government reports from 1981-present that describes fishing regulations each year. Understanding how the fishing regulations have changed over time and comparing them with changing abundance and catch can help us to better understand if/how the regulations impacted fish abundance, which can help with recommending better future harvest scenarios for when the fishery reopens.
Other research priorities may be identified on this project or others in the Lab during the Spring 2026 term as student capacity allows.
Responsibilities:
- Review and synthesize annual Record of Management Strategy (RMS) documents from Fisheries and Oceans Canada, from 1981 – 2016; review Post Season Reports (PSR) from DFO from 2017 – present; for information related to the regulations of the Area 8 commercial chum gillnet fishery.
- Compile a dataset (in R or Excel, etc.) that merges annual regulations with catch and abundance datasets.
- Compile available datasets on spatial or temporal environmental drivers (e.g., sea surface temperatures, oceanographic drivers).
- Document workflows and assist in preparing reproducible scripts (as applicable) for future use by lab members.
Qualifications:
- Preferred experience with MS Excel, R, and/or ArcGIS for dataset manipulations and arrangements.
- Strong organizational skills and ability to work independently.
- Interest in fisheries management, co-governance, or spatial modelling are an asset but not required.
Position Details:
- Hours: ~8-10 hours per week for 3 months with possibility of extension
- Start date: Spring term 2026
- Compensation: $24.74/hour
To Apply:
Please send a brief statement of interest, your CV, and a description of relevant coding/computational experience to Lindsay Begemann and Dr. Kyle Wilson. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis until the position is filled.
Evaluation of the adequacy of these qualifications is at the supervisor’s discretion.
Closing Date: Friday December 19th, 2025 at 4:00 pm
