When it comes to university, Carolina Costa-Giomi believes you get what you give. This spring, Carolina graduates with a Bachelor of Science in environmental science.

Deciding to make the most of her time at SFU, Carolina actively pursued opportunities to expand her education beyond the four walls of a classroom. Hitting the ground running, she volunteered with SFU鈥檚 Ecological Restoration Lab, the Salmon Watersheds Lab and ChangeSFU, participated as zero waste sustainability educator and became the poster student for the Faculty of Environment after a two-page photo feature of her tagging salmon in the Keogh River was published in SFU鈥檚 viewbook.

She made the Dean鈥檚 Honour Roll, the President鈥檚 Honour Roll and was awarded the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada鈥檚 Undergraduate Student Research award in 2018.

鈥淭he environmental science program has been an incredible, transformative, and educational journey,鈥 says Carolina. 鈥淭here are so many amazing opportunities to learn, gain valuable experience and create lasting relationships at SFU 鈥 it just takes a willing mind to seek them out.鈥

As her virtual convocation approaches, Carolina shares parting thoughts with the graduating class of 2020.

鈥淪tay positive and fight for what you believe in. As future leaders in science, it is up to us to responsibly use our knowledge to become advocates for the change we wish to see.鈥
