Contemplative Ecology Retreat

Description

The Ecological Chaplaincy Program's retreat will explore contemplative ecology, which is a broad field of inquiry and practice that focuses on bringing together inner and outer landscapes, physical and spiritual ecologies. Themes include developing a 鈥減laceful鈥 approach to land, working with climate anxiety and ecological grief and developing practices for resilience and self-reflection. The content will be drawn from various mystical, scientific, poetic and literary traditions. The retreat is non-sectarian with no ritual or devotional components, but participants should feel comfortable with silent meditation and spirituality in general.

This 3-night semi-structured retreat will take place at Rivendell Retreat Centre鈥檚 Hermitage located in the forests on the south-east edge of Bowen Island, a 20-minute ferry ride from Horseshoe Bay. The retreat includes meals, daily silent meditation, four sessions of instruction from retreat leader Jason Brown, sharing circles, guided forest walks, and a group hike outing. A more detailed schedule will be shared with confirmed participants. We will arrive on Friday, May 2nd and leave on Monday, May 5th. Participants must arrive on Friday, but are free to leave after dinner on Sunday if needed.

The retreat is designed for participants in the new Climate Resilience Peer Mentorship Training Program, but additional openings are available to the wider SFU student community. If you are interested in becoming a Peer Mentor in the Fall of 2025, let Jason know!

The retreat will be capped at six participants. Participants confirm their attendance by registering and paying the fee to the retreat leader. Accommodation is single occupant rustic cottages located a minute鈥檚 walk from a central cabin.
