Adjunct Faculty Associates (Adjunct FAs) work closely with a small group of student teachers in the supervision of their EDUC 405 certifying practicum.

Overview

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Adjunct Faculty Associates (Adjunct FAs) in the Preservice Professional Studies' teacher education programs at ÓÈÎïÊÓƵ work closely with a small group of student teachers in the supervision of their EDUC 405 certifying practicum. Adjunct FAs also maintain effective relationships between SFU's Faculty of Education and public schools. Adjunct FAs are generally non-seconded teachers, but they may also be retired teachers or other experienced educators.

Please note that Adjunct FAs may be required to drive considerable distances as the program uses placements throughout the lower mainland.

SUPERVISION OF STUDENT TEACHERS

Supervising student teachers during the EDUC 405 certifying practicum is the shared responsibility of Adjunct Faculty Associates (Adjunct FA) and School Associates (SA). Adjunct FAs also help to clarify the responsibilities of the SA, who plays a pivotal role in the preparation of student teachers. Adjunct FAs are expected to visit schools regularly, deal with a range of challenging supervisory situations and develop open and collegial relationships with teachers and SAs.

Preservice Professional Studies is currently recruiting Adjunct Faculty Associates to supervise up to 4 student teachers during their EDUC 405 certifying practicum semester (September-December).

  • Supervision of student teachers will occur throughout the Lower Mainland.
  • Access to a vehicle is necessary.
  • Travel reimbursement is $.70/km (home to schools and back).
  • Adjunct FAs should allow up to 8 half-days per student teacher for supervision throughout the semester.

Adjunct FAs may also be required to attend Program Days on campus for training, in-service and workshops throughout the semester.

BECOMING AN ADJUNCT FACULTY ASSOCIATE

At SFU, we are dedicated to the development of outstanding teachers—ethically responsible, competent professionals who are committed to preparing children to live as decent, informed, knowledgeable participants in a democratic and pluralistic society.

The Faculty of Education welcomes applicants who are from a variety of backgrounds that reflect the diversity of Canadian society. If you are interested in learning more about the position, we invite you to attend the next FA information session.

About the Experience

SFU's teacher education programs use a unique staffing model, which sees faculty members, seconded school district personnel (faculty associates) and classroom teachers (school associates) work collegially to create the highest quality educational experience for student teachers. Adjunct Faculty Associates are expected to visit schools regularly, deal with a range of challenging supervisory situations and develop open and collegial relationships with teachers and SAs.

The supervision of student teachers

The supervision of student teachers during the placement and practicum assignments of the PDP (EDUC 401 and 405) is the shared responsibility of faculty assocates (FA) and school associates (SA). The FA assumes the role of mentor and guide, rather than inspector and judge. Under such supervisory guidance, student teachers are helped to take major steps in their professional development. FAs also help to clarify the responsibilities of the SA who plays a pivotal role in the preparation of student teachers.

"When I went through the PDP I had an amazing experience and I was mentored by some incredible teachers that I learned so much from. Now as a school associate, I love seeing the energy that the student teachers bring into my classroom. They're so excited. It's contagious."

Tami McDiarmid, Faculty Associate Mentee
