Welcoming New Faculty Members
This fall, we welcomed Emily Cameron, Sharon Hou, and Greg Sutherland to our Faculty. Curious about their initial highlights and what they are most excited for 2025? Explore their reflections below.
Dr. Emily Cameron joined our Faculty this fall as an Assistant Professor. She is a registered psychologist whose research focuses on child socioemotional development from a biopsychosocial and transgenerational approach. Her research and advocacy are informed by her role as a parent and her experience working as a clinician in multiple settings, including with rural Manitoban families.
Q: What has been a highlight of your experience since becoming an Assistant Professor in the Faculty?
A: I have thoroughly enjoyed connecting with colleagues and learning about the SFU community. SFU and the Faculty of Education have been very welcoming. In addition to settling in to the Faculty, a clear highlight has been the environment in which we get to work here at SFU. On a clear day, the view of the mountains from Burnaby campus is unparalleled. Walking or running through the trails has been a definite highlight.
Q: What are you most looking forward to in 2025?
A: I am most looking forward to engaging with students through classroom teaching and graduate supervision. I鈥檒l be teaching my first SFU course in Spring and hope to be welcoming my first graduate student later in the year.
Dr. Sharon Hou (she/her) joined our Faculty this fall from the University of British Columbia and the University of Calgary. Her research and clinical interests are advancing diversity and equity in children's health and wellness, reaching and serving underrepresented and underserved populations of children and families.
Q: What has been a highlight of your experience since becoming an Assistant Professor in the Faculty?
A: Everyone I have met since joining the faculty has been so warm and welcoming. That鈥檚 been a highlight, to get to know the people and the community here. Another highlight has been working closely with my colleagues and mentors in Educational Psychology. They have been instrumental in helping me settle in while I learn the ebb and flow of the day-to-day.
Q: What are you most looking forward to in 2025?
A: I鈥檓 looking forward to teaching and engaging with the diverse student body here at SFU. It鈥檚 exciting to be part of a community that is passionate about shaping the future of education. I鈥檓 excited to learn from my colleagues. I鈥檓 also excited to build my research program. My work is inherently interdisciplinary, so I look forward to opportunities to collaborate with others in the faculty with a focus on community engaged work.
Dr. Greg Sutherland joined our Faculty this fall as a lecturer. He has worked in undergraduate and professional programs for the past 10 years and is continuing his nearly 20-year career as a K-12 classroom teacher and M茅tis scholar.
Q: What has been a highlight of your experience since becoming a lecturer in the Faculty?
A: Since officially joining the Faculty this Fall, I have been overwhelmed by the warmth and hospitality of my new colleagues. Despite the adversity wrought by these challenging times, everyone has made a special effort to extend kindness and collegiality in every interaction I have had. From the thoughtful induction and orientation processes to invitations to join committees, to sharing instructional and research resources, to offers to sit in or speak in colleagues' classes, I have felt so supported and valued as a new faculty member. This has definitely been a highlight for me this term!
Q: What are you most looking forward to in 2025?
A: I look forward to continuing the conversations that started in my first four months. I feel I am becoming more familiar with the good work happening in IERC, my cognate group, and across the Faculty. I am prepared to reciprocate some of the generosity shared with me so far.
Q: Is there anything else you would like to share?
A: I would like to express my deep appreciation for the work of C茅cile Bullock, Vicki Kelly, and the many colleagues who have collaborated to create the early career faculty onboarding process. It has been a treat to have an opportunity to build collegial bonds and have our burning questions answered about everything from TPC to TTR (and the many other acronyms that fill our days).
