Education professors featured in unique publication spotlighting B.C.'s Francophone Community
Drs. Isabelle C么t茅 and C茅cile Bullock, along with eleven other researchers across six universities have collaborated on a unique book about British Columbia鈥檚 Francophone community.
The Francophone Community in British Columbia: Education, Diversity, and Identities], published by Les Presses de l鈥橴niversit茅 Lavel, this new book offers a unique portrait of the Francophone community by discussing issues such as education rights, educational policy, teacher training, and inclusion and diversity in French-language schools and other settings.
The book鈥檚 co-editor, Genevi猫ve Brisson, says that 鈥渂y reading this book, you will discover a Francophone that is still largely unknown but linguistically rich thanks to the diverse origins of British Columbians.鈥
One of the topics covered in this new publication is teaching and learning French as a second language in the face of new educational policy directions in B.C. Dr. Bullock believes it has been particularly instructive to work on policies relating to the learning of languages鈥攁nd in particular, the teaching and learning of French鈥攂ecause this sort of policy work has the potential to promote the linguistic and cultural diversity of the province of British Columbia.
This unique experience allowed Dr. Bullock to forge links with other researchers who do not often publish together, fostering collaboration with Dr. R茅mi L茅ger of the Department of Political Science at SFU. This interdisciplinary outlook on local Francophone communities and their dynamics contributed to making this project a great collective achievement in the service of languages education more broadly.
Another highlighted topic in the publication is the integration of Indigenous perspectives and the key challenges for non-Indigenous French immersion teachers. 鈥淚t was an honour to publish a chapter on this incredibly important issue, especially in a Francophone minority context鈥, shares Dr. C么t茅. 鈥淲orking with colleagues who have different expertise and perspectives on the Francophone minority context in B.C. is critical not only for the B.C. Francophone community, but for communities across the country.鈥
