Learning to teach in French can be a little intimidating, but for PDP student Sofie Van De Keere, the decision 鈥渆st venu naturellement鈥 (came naturally)

As a former French immersion student, Sofie understood the importance and opportunities that come from learning one of Canada鈥檚 official languages, so when she heard about the French module in the Professional Development Program (PDP), she was intrigued.

鈥淚 knew that I really wanted to pursue French teaching and SFU provided me the avenue to do just that,鈥 says Sofie. 鈥淵es, the PDP might be longer than some other programs at 16 months, but it also gave me different opportunities to explore different facets of education along with French culture and language I would not have learned nor experienced otherwise.鈥

The PDP French module focuses on issues specific to teaching in French in British Columbia and prepares student teachers to instruct Core French, French Immersion or Programme Francophone at the elementary or secondary level.

Supported by SFU鈥檚 Office of Francophone and Francophile Affairs (OFFA), student teachers in the PDP French module have access to weekly, personalized linguistic and linguistic identity support sessions, known as Content and Language Integrated Competency or CLIC, to help bolster their confidence and continually improve their French proficiency.

鈥淥FFA and CLIC were always our biggest cheerleaders. It was great to have a French community close to us that really wanted us to succeed as French teachers,鈥 says Sofie. 鈥淐LIC provided us with a chance to address our vulnerabilities going into our careers as French teachers and learn how to grow from them as we began prepping for our practicums. We learned the significance of community and establishing a network of support early on in the PDP experience. I know we will be there for each other throughout our next steps in our career as a result.鈥

For Sofie, having this ongoing support system in place early in the program proved to be critical, especially during difficult times she encountered while student teaching during COVID-19.

鈥淭he most challenging part of the program was learning to adapt and deal with uncertainty. It took a little bit of time and required a learning curve but learning to be flexible with whatever gets thrown your way is a huge part of what it means to be an educator. Teachers don鈥檛 get enough credit for hoping for plan A while preparing themselves for plans B through Z.鈥

Despite the obstacles she faced student teaching and learning during the pandemic, thanks to the support she received from her colleagues, the CLIC and OFFA community along with the tools and skills she obtained from the program, Sofie was able to persevere and thrive, taking those opportunities to absorb, grow, make mistakes, and eventually learn from them which will serve her well as she enters the field and pursues a career teaching French in British Columbia.

Getting her teaching certification has opened a world of possibilities for Sofie to explore as she begins her teaching journey in a province where French teachers remain in high demand. 鈥淭here are so many avenues to pursue within a career in education, says Sofie. 鈥淚 plan to spend time getting to know my preferred school districts, and eventually find a high school teaching position for Core French. I also plan to continue exploring more of the language and culture within this profession in the coming years.鈥

Reflecting on her time studying in the PDP French module and the ups and downs she encountered, Sofie sums it up best:

鈥淧ursuing the French program through SFU was one of the more impactful decisions I could have made in terms of my education.鈥 鈥淒on鈥檛 get me wrong, it was not easy. There were some challenging times throughout both of my practicums and throughout my time in PDP as a whole. However, I truly believe that it is through adversities that we grow the most. I feel an overwhelming sense of gratitude to all of my faculty advisors, my professors, my colleagues, and my school associate who not only believed in all of us but pushed us to learn and grow throughout the program.鈥

En tant qu鈥檃ncienne 茅tudiante en immersion fran莽aise, Sofie avait d茅j脿 compris l鈥檌mportance de l鈥檃pprentissage d鈥檜ne des langues officielles du Canada et des possibilit茅s que cela pouvait lui offrir, lorsqu鈥檈lle a entendu parler du Professional Development Program (PDP) 鈥 module fran莽ais qui l鈥檃 intrigu茅e.

芦 Je savais que je voulais vraiment poursuivre une carri猫re en enseignement en fran莽ais et SFU m鈥檈n a donn茅 les moyens 禄, explique Sofie. 芦 Oui, le PDP est peut-锚tre plus long que d鈥檃utres programmes, mais il m鈥檃 aussi donn茅 de nombreuses occasions d鈥檈xplorer diff茅rentes facettes de l鈥櫭ヾucation, de la langue et des cultures francophones que je n鈥檃urais pas acquises ou v茅cues autrement. 禄

Le PDP 鈥 module fran莽ais met l鈥檃ccent sur des enjeux pr茅cis concernant l鈥檈nseignement en fran莽ais en Colombie-Britannique et pr茅pare les 茅tudiants-ma卯tres 脿 enseigner le fran莽ais de base, l鈥檌mmersion fran莽aise ou le programme francophone au niveau primaire ou secondaire.

Appuy茅s par le Bureau des affaires francophones et francophiles (BAFF) de SFU, les 茅tudiants-ma卯tres du PDP 鈥 module fran莽ais ont acc猫s 脿 des s茅ances hebdomadaires personnalis茅es de soutien linguistique et d鈥檌dentit茅 linguistique, connues sous le nom de Comp茅tence langagi猫re int茅gr茅e au contenu ou CLIC, afin d鈥檃ccro卯tre leur confiance et d鈥檃m茅liorer continuellement leurs comp茅tences en fran莽ais.

芦 Le BAFF et le programme CLIC ont toujours constitu茅 nos meneuses de claques les plus 茅patantes. C鈥櫭﹖ait formidable d鈥檃voir une communaut茅 en fran莽ais proche de nous qui voulait vraiment que nous r茅ussissions en tant qu鈥檈nseignants de fran莽ais 禄, dit Sofie. 芦 Le CLIC nous a permis de nous pencher sur nos vuln茅rabilit茅s en tant qu鈥檈nseignants de fran莽ais et d鈥檃pprendre 脿 grandir 脿 partir d鈥檈lles en nous pr茅parant pour nos stages. Nous avons appris l鈥檌mportance de la communaut茅 et nous avons 茅tabli un r茅seau de soutien d猫s le d茅but de l鈥檈xp茅rience du PDP. Je sais que nous serons l脿 les uns pour les autres tout au long des prochaines 茅tapes de notre carri猫re. 禄

Pour Sofie, la mise en place de ce syst猫me de soutien continu au d茅but du programme s鈥檈st av茅r茅e cruciale, surtout dans les moments difficiles qu鈥檈lle a rencontr茅s pendant ses 茅tudes en temps de pand茅mie de COVID-19.

芦 La partie la plus difficile du programme a 茅t茅 d鈥檃pprendre 脿 faire face 脿 l鈥檌ncertitude et 脿 s鈥檡 adapter. Il a fallu un peu de temps et cela a exig茅 une p茅riode d鈥檃pprentissage, mais apprendre 脿 锚tre flexible avec tout ce qui se pr茅sente sur son chemin est une grande partie du travail d鈥櫭ヾucateur. Les enseignants m茅ritent qu鈥檕n reconnaisse que tout en misant sur un plan A, ils se pr茅parent toujours aux plans B 脿 Z.

Malgr茅 les obstacles auxquels elle a d没 faire face dans ses 茅tudes pendant la pand茅mie, elle remercie le soutien qu鈥檈lle a re莽u de ses coll猫gues, du programme CLIC et du BAFF ainsi que les comp茅tences et les outils qu鈥檈lle a acquis gr芒ce 脿 ce programme. Sofie a su pers茅v茅rer et s鈥櫭﹑anouir, profitant de ces occasions pour s鈥檈nrichir, grandir, faire des erreurs et, en d茅finitive, apprendre d鈥檈lles, ce qui lui servira bien lorsqu鈥檈lle sera sur le terrain et poursuivra une carri猫re d鈥檈nseignante de fran莽ais en Colombie-Britannique.

L鈥檕btention de son certificat en enseignement lui a ouvert un monde de possibilit茅s 脿 explorer puisqu鈥檈lle entreprend son parcours professionnel dans une province o霉 les enseignants de fran莽ais sont tr猫s pris茅s. 芦 Il y a tellement de chemins 脿 emprunter dans une carri猫re en 茅ducation, dit Sofie. 禄 J鈥檃i l鈥檌ntention de prendre le temps de bien conna卯tre mes conseils scolaires pr茅f茅r茅s, afin de postuler comme enseignante de fran莽ais de base au secondaire. J鈥檃i 茅galement l鈥檌ntention de continuer d鈥檃pprofondir la langue et la culture au sein de cette profession au cours des prochaines ann茅es.

En repensant 脿 ses 茅tudes au programme PDP - module fran莽ais ainsi qu鈥檃ux hauts et aux bas qu鈥檈lle a travers茅s, voici le r茅sum茅 que Sofie en fait :

芦 脡tudier dans le programme en fran莽ais de SFU a 茅t茅 l鈥檜ne des d茅cisions les plus importantes en ce qui concerne mes 茅tudes. 禄 芦 Comprenez-moi bien, je ne dis pas que c鈥櫭﹖ait facile. Il y a eu des moments difficiles tout au long de mes deux stages et durant le programme PDP dans son ensemble. Cependant, je crois sinc猫rement que c鈥檈st dans l鈥檃dversit茅 qu鈥檕n grandit le plus. Je ressens 茅norm茅ment de gratitude envers tous mes conseillers p茅dagogiques, mes professeurs, mes coll猫gues et mon ma卯tre-associ茅 qui non seulement croyaient en chacun de nous, mais qui nous ont pouss茅s 脿 apprendre et 脿 grandir tout au long du programme. 禄
