How Co-op and the CMNSU Prepared Harshita Srivastava for a Career in Public Relations

June 11, 2025

When School of Communication graduand Harshita Srivastava decided on SFU years ago in her home country of India she did not know what to expect, just that she was excited for the independence of studying abroad and the journey to come. Now, she will be crossing the stage with a Bachelor of Arts in Communication, gaining valuable experience and friendships while leading as President of the .

She originally joined SFU to study Business and Economics but transitioned into Communication after falling in love with CMNS 110. Her first year of courses took place at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, so she took online courses while living in India; often having to attend lectures in the middle of the night. When it was time to return to in-person courses, she thanks the School of Communication professors and advisors for helping her transition into both university life and life in Canada.

Srivastava always had a love for marketing and events, and took many different volunteer positions to continue to gain experience in these areas while taking courses, including being the events manager for various clubs. She eventually found her home in the CMNSU, however, applying and receiving the position of Vice President in 2023.

鈥淢y involvement in CMNSU has been the most rewarding experience of my university journey. I found a supportive community, not only as friends but as individuals who genuinely share and understand the passion that goes into the field of communication,鈥 says Srivastava.

Here, she was able to gain experience in a variety of areas including events, communications and multimedia while also developing her leadership skills. When it was time to elect a new President for the club in 2024, Srivastava received the role based on her work as the Vice President. Her cherished memories in university include the countless late nights that she spent in the CMNSU meeting room planning events and celebrating each other鈥檚 successes. She also considers this experience in the student union key to deciding what she wanted to do career-wise.

鈥淏eing in the CMNSU helped clarify what I wanted to do in my career. I was able to see various facets of communication and identify the areas I am most interested in,鈥 she says.

She also gained valuable experience in co-op, working as the Outreach and Events Assistant for , a non-profit organization that combats poverty related to disability and helps people access the Canada Disability Benefit. Srivastava completed an 8-month co-op and continued working with the organization part-time as she completed her degree.

鈥淭hat was such an incredibly valuable experience, particularly because I had not engaged in outreach work to this degree before. My managers provided mentorship in communication strategies and introduced me to tools like email marketing that significantly widened my professional skill set,鈥 she says.

These experiences helped land Srivastava a full-time job before she even graduated, as she has been working as the Digital Content and Communications Coordinator at BC Family Doctors since May. This role includes managing the BC Family Doctors website and content, providing analytics, email marketing, and designing digital and print materials.

In the future, Srivastava plans to return to SFU to do her master鈥檚 degree in Communication, excited by the work she had done with professors Fred Lesage and Kirsten McAllister during her undergraduate degree. For now, however, she plans to see where her current role will take her and wants to continue to build her skillset in public relations with non-profit organizations.

Congratulations on graduation, Harshita! We hope it鈥檚 not too long before we see you back at SFU.
