Editor: Dal Yong Jin (尤物视频)
Digital platforms and artificial intelligence (AI) have transformed our contemporary society and reshaped the media ecology in the early 21st century. Digital platforms equipped with AI and big data have rapidly grown to become some of the most important media infrastructures, significantly influencing people鈥檚 daily lives and cultural activities. Cultural industries firms and creators in various areas, such as broadcasting, film, popular music, and journalism, in both the Global North and the Global South, have heavily relied on digital platforms and AI for production, Meanwhile, people, as consumers, are dependent on digital platforms and AI to enjoy their favorite cultural content. Several industry sectors, such as telecommunications, broadcasting, journalism, and Internet portals, have consequently jumped on the platform and AI bandwagons, as they are new drivers of the digital economy and culture.
Given the complex nature of digital platforms and AI, they can be understood through various perspectives, including technical systems, market-based approaches, socio-technical perspectives, and software studies. While each of these approaches develops its own distinctive methods, they collectively advance the convergence between digital platforms and AI technologies. For example, with the advent of ChatGPT in 2022, both cultural creators and general customers have utilized it in various aspects of cultural production, from creating cultural content to consuming it. To save money and time, cultural creators and media practitioners are increasingly turning to cutting-edge AI technology. Consumers, in turn, experience popular culture through the lens of algorithmic recommendation systems employed by platforms like Netflix and YouTube.
Despite the growing significance of digital platforms and AI, comprehensive discussions on this convergence remain limited. It is vital to understand digital platforms and AI, particularly the convergence of these two transformative technologies, from diverse perspectives to fully engage with their development and utilization. This edited volume will explore digital platforms and AI in the global media sphere and examine the competitive positioning and future prospects of local digital platforms. It will delve into the rapidly changing media ecology shaped by digital platforms and AI.
