About the Role

The SFU Community-Engaged Research Initiative (CERi) is seeking a collaborative, organized, and community-oriented SFU graduate student to serve as Project Coordinator for the 312 Main Research Shop and other CERi projects. The Project Coordinator will focus on evaluation research to demonstrate the impact of community-engaged scholarship, while also coordinating research projects with community organizations, supporting student researchers, and contributing to CERi’s partnerships, communications, and events.

This is a dynamic opportunity for an SFU graduate student to gain experience in evaluation and impact assessment, community-engaged research, project coordination, and applied social impact work while advancing equity-based collaboration across sectors.

Key Responsibilities:

Evaluation Research 

  • Lead evaluation activities to document the impact of community-engaged research.

  • Prepare impact reports and synthesize findings from surveys, interviews, literature reviews, and desk research.

  • Contribute to scholarly and public-facing publications that communicate outcomes to partners and wider audiences.

  • Highlight the value of supporting research activity for Vancity Community Foundation and the role of research shops within Canadian universities.

Research Shop Coordination

  • Support intake and onboarding of new community research projects.

  • Recruit and coordinate student researchers and placements.

  • Facilitate communication between students, faculty mentors, and community partners.

  • Track timelines, deliverables, and outcomes, maintaining clear documentation.

  • Support ethics processes, grant applications, and partnership development to strengthen the Research Shop.

CERi Project and Partnership Support

  • Assist with the coordination of other CERi-led projects.

  • Build and sustain relationships with research partners and community organizations.
  • Support planning and implementation of partnership activities

Events and Communications

  • Help organize workshops, roundtables, and public events.

  • Contribute to communications such as newsletters, social media, and storytelling projects.

  • Assist with knowledge mobilization and documentation of CERi’s work.

Skills & Qualifications:

Required:

  • Must be a currently registered SFU graduate student in good standing
  • Demonstrated interest or experience in community engagement, applied research, or social impact
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills
  • Ability to coordinate multiple projects and maintain attention to detail
  • Commitment to principles of equity, inclusion, and ethical research practices
  • Comfort working with a diversity of community groups and individuals

Preferred:

  • Experience with community-based research (discipline or field open) or participatory research methods

  • Familiarity with event planning or public communications (e.g., Canva, social media, newsletters)

  • Academic or professional background in relevant areas (e.g., social sciences, public policy, community development)

  • Experience working with nonprofit, grassroots, or equity-seeking organizations

The Research Assistant/Project Coordinator will support project activities across all phases, including literature review, community engagement, data analysis, and development of educational materials. This role requires strong research skills, familiarity with climate and social equity issues, and experience in community-engaged research (CER). The successful candidate will play a vital role in creating and refining resources for social sector organizations, supporting workshops, and ensuring data collection aligns with project objectives.
