Anne Marie Gagné: an exceptional communicator with a passion for the Francophonie
After 11 years with SFU's Office of Francophone and Francophile Affairs (OFFA), Anne Marie Gagn茅, Manager, Communications, Marketing and Engagement, will be stepping down effective August 1, 2025. Her career at SFU has been marked by meaningful connections and numerous accomplishments.
Anne Marie Gagn茅 joined OFFA in 2014 as a Recruitment Officer, just a year after moving to British Columbia. In this role, she travelled across the province and the Yukon promoting the French Cohort Program in Public and International Affairs. This formative experience allowed her to better understand the challenges facing minority language communities and to become well-acquainted f with BC鈥檚 education system.
She later transitioned into the role of Coordinator, Communications, Marketing and Recruitment. Claire Tr茅panier, OFFA鈥檚 Director at the time, recalls: 鈥淎s soon as she arrived in her newly-created position, she quickly put in place the communication tools needed to raise OFFA鈥檚 profile in BC and across Canada. It was with creativity and innovation that the promotion of our many programs gained new momentum.鈥
In January 2022, her role evolved into Manager, Communications, Marketing and Engagement. Reflecting on her journey, Anne Marie shares: 鈥淲hen I arrived at OFFA, I was pinching myself at how lucky I was to be working in French in British Columbia for a prestigious, major English-language university. It鈥檚 a feeling I鈥檝e had throughout my 11 years at OFFA, where I鈥檝e been able to live the dream of helping to promote my mother tongue and culture and create projects that have a concrete impact on the community I鈥檓 in.鈥
Fierce Determination
Those who know Anne Marie can attest to her passion and tenacity for bringing meaningful projects to life. These qualities have enabled her to promote French-language programs and services at SFU so that they are known and recognized鈥攁n ongoing challenge: 鈥淢aking the linguistic majority aware of the place and importance of French, one of Canada鈥檚 official languages, in a minority context is a daily challenge,鈥 explains Anne Marie.
Gino Leblanc, Director of BAFF, emphasizes Anne Marie鈥檚 professionalism, but above all her passion: 鈥淲hen she鈥檚 out in the field, we know that the representation of our programs and activities is shared with rigour and enthusiasm. Just as important for a team manager, we can always be sure that the values carried by BAFF will be graciously embodied by Anne Marie.鈥
According to Ash Tanasiychuk, Director of Marketing and Communications at SFU鈥檚 Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, 鈥淭he role of a professional communicator is that of a unicorn: an impossible mix of skills鈥攚riting and editing; working in print, social, and web; event planning and community relationship building. Anne Marie wields all of these and more. After working together for 7 years, it鈥檚 clear that Anne Marie is the real deal.鈥
Thanks to her exceptional communication skills, Anne Marie has played a key role in strengthening and expanding ties between SFU and the French-speaking community, positioning OFFA as a leader in British Columbia. 鈥淭his recognition across the province and beyond is very gratifying. It represents the fruits of an entire team鈥檚 work, and I鈥檓 very proud to have been able to contribute to it,鈥 says Anne Marie.
Memorable Encounters
Through dozens of 鈥淧rintemps de la francophonie,鈥 graduation ceremonies, conferences and other events, Anne Marie has made some memorable encounters. One in particular that left a lasting impression on her Dany Laferri猫re. In 2023, she had the honour of organizing the visit of the writer and member of the Acad茅mie fran莽aise to SFU for the presentation of an honorary doctorate in literature: 鈥淚t was truly a privilege to share a week with him and to enter his universe, his world. It allowed me to put my way of being and doing things into perspective. I felt I had experienced something unique.鈥
The people who have had the greatest impact on her over the years have also been her colleagues: 鈥淓ach of these people has left their mark on me and helped shape who I am today. What unites and brings together the members of OFFA is the passion they have for their work. I鈥檝e been lucky enough to work alongside people with big hearts and big vision, and it鈥檚 truly been an honour.鈥
Time for adventure鈥
Anne Marie and her family made the bold decision to set off on an around-the-world adventure before returning to their native Quebec. 鈥淲e鈥檝e always dreamed of exploring the world as a family. Wherever we end up next, I鈥檇 like to keep a link with the Canadian Francophonie, a passion I鈥檝e developed over the years at OFFA. I鈥檒l always be an ally of the Francophonie.鈥
Indeed, for Anne Marie, the Francophonie is a way of life, as Gino Leblanc points out: 鈥淚n her family life, Anne Marie is a mother committed to her children and extremely concerned about providing them with a rich, stimulating environment in French in a province where this requires a daily effort. Together with her partner Vincent, she embodies the spirit of a parent who believes in the Francophonie, embraces the West Coast lifestyle and never hesitates to embark on new adventures and take a bite out of life. She will have shaped OFFA鈥檚 communications, marketing and engagement strategies for more than a decade, with a strong, contagious energy that will be hard to replace.
I wish Anne Marie good, warm winds for your worldwide family journey ahead.鈥

Gino Leblanc
Director at OFFA
When I think of the years Anne Marie has spent on my team at OFFA, the word that comes to mind to express her contribution is 鈥減rofessional鈥. Both in terms of her skills and her ability to carry out her tasks, but also in embodying OFFA's mission, Anne Marie is a pro, someone who has a limitless professional future ahead of her.
In addition to being an experienced member of the OFFA team, Anne Marie never rests on her laurels. She's a go-getter who's always hungry to do more, to explore the opportunities that present themselves. She has regularly sought to perfect her skills, always on the lookout for new knowledge, new working tools and to study the global environment in which BAFF evolves.
Claire Tr茅panier
Director at OFFA from 2008 and 2017
Thanks to her skills in public relations, the ties between OFFA, SFU's administration, the province's schools and the Francophone and Francophile communities were strengthened. Anne Marie's contribution was certainly unprecedented. Personally, I'll always remember her positive attitude, her ability to listen and, what's more, her beautiful smile!
Ash Tanasiychuk
Director, Marketing & Communications, FASS, SFU
Anne Marie is an incredible colleague. She is helpful, congenial, open, encouraging, and collaborative. She was one of the first people to help me feel welcome within the professional communicator community here when I arrived at SFU to work. She is passionate. Her commitment to OFFA is genuine. Her desire to further la Francophonie at SFU and in the Lower Mainland is authentic. She is talented. SFU will be a losing a powerful spark when Anne Marie departs, but her legacy will continue to burn brightly for a very long time to come.
Anne Marie Gagn茅 will remain in her position until August 1, 2025. You can reach her on and, between now and August 1st, at baff_comm@sfu.ca. This address will remain active after her departure for her successor.
