The movie screening will be preceded by a Q&A with the author and associate producer of the film, Kim Th煤y, moderated by Nicolas Kenny, professor, Department of History, SFU.

SYNOPSIS
A wealthy refugee family leaves Vietnam and begins a new life in Montreal after a dangerous sea crossing. Shy Tinh must learn a new language and integrate into her new environment.
About Kim Th煤y
Kim Th煤y was born in Vietnam in 1968. At the age of 10, she left Vietnam along with a wave of refugees commonly referred to in the media as 鈥渢he boat people鈥� and settled with her family in Quebec, Canada. A graduate in translation and law, she has worked as a seamstress, interpreter, lawyer and chef-restaurant owner. She lives in Montreal and devotes her life to writing.
Kim Th煤y has received many awards, including the Governor General鈥檚 Literary Award in 2010, and was one of the top 4 finalists of the Alternative Nobel Prize in 2018. Her books have sold more than 850,000 copies around the world and have been translated into 29 languages and distributed across 40 countries and territories.

A mother finds the diary of her son which has "10 things to do before the end of the world" after he has fallen into a coma. She started doing them one by one in the hope that her son would see how beautiful life is and that he must come back.

SYNOPSIS
Phil Comeau shines a spotlight on the Ordre de Jacques-Cartier, a powerful secret society that operated from 1926 to 1965, infiltrating every sector of Canadian society and forging the fate of French-language communities. Through never-before-heard testimony from former members of the Order, along with historically accurate dramatic reconstructions, this film paints a gripping portrait of the social and political struggles of Canadian francophone-minority communities.
This film will be presented as part of the history course, HIST 430 - French Americas taught by Nicolas Kenny. To attend this screening, please contact Laurence Gagnon by email.

As part of SFU's Printemps de la francophonie and Rendez-vous de la francophonie, the Official Languages Committee of the British Columbia Federal Council, the F茅d茅ration des francophones de la Colombie-Britannique and SFU's Office of Francophone and Francophile Affairs invite you to a celebration of the Francophonie on Friday, March 22 at UBC Robson Square!
