Lab safety

Laboratory safety programs apply across many, if not all, campus laboratories. They are developed to ensure the health and safety of university members and to ensure regulatory compliance. The programs also set out the university's program-specific requirements as well as support education and training. The SFU Laboratory safety manual assembles key information from the SFU Laboratory safety program in a single document.

Volunteers in the laboratory

SFU welcomes volunteers from diverse backgrounds into its research labs, offering valuable learning opportunities. Principal Investigators (PIs) are responsible for ensuring that volunteers receive proper safety training and supervision.

Training Requirements
Training requirements vary based on the volunteer鈥檚 role, experience, and duration of stay:

  1. Observation-Only Volunteers:
Volunteers who are not using hazardous materials or equipment and are only observing must complete the EHS Safety Essentials Training to prepare for emergencies.
  2. Hands-On Volunteers:
Volunteers using hazardous materials or equipment must complete the relevant Research Safety Training offered by EHS (e.g., Laboratory Safety, Biosafety, Radiation Safety). Additionally, PIs and lab supervisors must provide lab-specific training, including emergency procedures.
  3. Underage Volunteers:
Volunteers who are minors must be supervised at all times and always within the line of sight of a trained laboratory personnel.

Special Considerations
Some labs may involve particularly hazardous materials or equipment such as dangerous chemicals, lasers, radiation, or fieldwork. In these cases, it is essential to contact EHS (labsafe@sfu.ca) for specific guidance.

Volunteers handling biohazards must be listed on a biosafety permit.

All volunteers must sign the Volunteer Agreement Form before starting. If the volunteer is a minor, a parent must also sign an addendum. For more details about the form, contact the Director of Risk Management at risk_srs@sfu.ca. For further questions or guidance, please contact EHS at labsafe@sfu.ca.
