Telematic Parallels (interactive video installation)

Course: IAT 386 Directed Studies
Description: Telematic Parallels is a site-specific interactive video installation that connects remote locations rooted in a similar purpose. Through three live video feeds composed into a singular tableau, this digital collage collapses the distance between study rooms around the SFU Surrey campus. Using hand tracking and gestures, students can experience a sense of play as they create a liminal arrangement that connects each space to each other.
Studio A, Studio B, and the Mezzanine are communal spaces for collaboration and student activity. Distance separates these locations although they are rooted in a similar purpose. This work explores how the sense of distance can be manipulated to connect students across the SFU Surrey campus.
Telematic Parallels is a proof-of-concept project with the intention of creating a template that can be used and refined for future opportunities.
