Make science happen in Biological Sciences

You want to save species from extinction. Or make medical breakthroughs. Work for the Ministry of Forests. Protect our salmon stocks, or work with government agencies to clean up our rivers and watersheds. You haven鈥檛 yet 鈥 but you can. Whatever your passion is, find a solid path to it here.

GET GOING WITH BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES

Solving the pressing environmental challenges we face calls for understanding of many areas of biology, such as conservation biology, ecology, ecotoxicology and cell physiology. As a student, you鈥檒l benefit from diverse and experiential research opportunities and laboratory courses that expose you to a wide range of academic opportunities early in your degree.

Talk to our recruiter, Claire, about how you can get going in Biological Sciences.

Highlights

  • Get started with research early. Biological Sciences students can get academic credit and hands-on experience working in research labs as early as second year.
  • Add a summer field course or semester at  to immerse yourself in the life-changing environment of Barkley Sound.
  • Our Ecology, Evolution and Conservation concentration meets the course requirements for BC鈥檚 RPBio (Registered Professional Biologist) designation.
  • Get involved and connect with other students and faculty through Biological Sciences events, such as BioBlitzes, outreach to local schools, and the annual botanical drawing showcase, photo contest and plant sale.
  • Our co-op placements include: BC Cancer Agency, BC Ministry of Forests, Canadian Food Inspection Agency, Environment and Climate Change Canada, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Fraser Health Authority, Freshwater Fisheries Society, Hemmera, Nautilus Environmental, Stantec

鈥淚 think the SFU biology department is the most well-rounded biology department. Not only can you take lectures and labs in biology, but you can also take intro courses in statistics and computer science, so it gives you a lot of breadth and real-world applications when going into graduate school or applying for jobs in the future. It鈥檚 something that a lot of other universities don鈥檛 really focus on.鈥
