The Open Scholarship Framework

The Institute for Neuroscience and Neurotechnology (INN) is leading the implementation of SFU鈥檚 Open Science and Open Scholarship Principles by working with experts and growing the open scholarship community at SFU.

In partnership with the鈥,鈥 the鈥 initiative involves creating and carrying out an implementation plan to support SFU faculty, staff and students in integrating open scholarship practices into their projects from start to finish.

Open Science and Open Scholarship Principles

Open scholarship at SFU was shaped through a community consultation process during the Open Science Buy-In Project, which assessed the needs, challenges and benefits of open science at the university. This project led to a set of institutional guiding principles for practicing open science and open scholarship.

What is Open Science and Open Scholarship?

Open science is a research practice that aims to eliminate barriers to scholarly information and collaboration

Open science seeks to maximize the impacts of scholarly pursuits on society through the sharing of resources (e.g., data, protocols, software, hardware), intellectual property, scholarly publications, as well as the research process itself. Open scholarship is a broader practice which includes all 鈥渙pen鈥 practices across disciplines, from the sciences, to the social sciences, and humanities. Its effects can create more equitable access to scholarship, accelerate discovery and innovation, increase the鈥痚fficiency and quality of scholarship, and promote transparency and accountability.

Why Open Scholarship 尤物视频?

Adopting open scholarship practices directly supports SFU鈥檚 key strategic priorities of interdisciplinarity, engagement with communities, and knowledge mobilization

Open scholarship provides access to knowledge and resources for both academic and non-academic communities.鈥疘t opens new avenues of discovery, incorporates knowledge from different knowledge systems, and can solidify new partnerships and collaborations.

SFU is already engaged in many open scholarship activities. These include SFU's鈥, the鈥痜or publishing, the鈥Innovation Ecosystem that supports open innovation, the鈥, and the  initiative. A formal commitment to open science and further development of our open scholarship practices positions SFU amongst the leaders of open science in Canada. SFU is the first university in Canada to adopt open science for the whole institution 鈥 a reflection of SFU鈥檚 progressive spirit that has earned us an international reputation for transdisciplinary research and innovation.

Who is Involved in the Open Scholarship Framework at SFU?

The initiative has brought together all researchers at SFU, including faculty, staff and students. It includes SFU research leadership, as well as external partners and the broader SFU research community.

The Open Scholarship Framework initiative is led by Kelly Shen, INN Director of Operations. The Open Scholarship Implementation Committee, consisting of a broad cross-section of the SFU community, will guide the implementation plan and set priorities with input from the SFU community.

What's Next for the Open Scholarship Framework at SFU?

The institutional open science and open scholarship principles will guide the implementation of open scholarship at SFU.

A 3-year open scholarship implementation plan鈥痟as been drafted and will be refined in Summer 2025. Resources to support open scholarship and training events will be rolled out beginning Fall 2025.

To support implementation, we are hiring an Open Science Community Manager. Learn more about the position.
