The Open Science Buy-In Project was led by the INN and was completed in June 2024. It involved assessing the needs, challenges and benefits of implementing open science at the university. This project led to a set of institutional open science and open scholarship principles and a draft implementation plan.
The project was funded by the   and led by Brianne Kent, INN Associate Director and Assistant Professor, Psychology, and Kelly Shen, INN Director of Operations. The project was guided by the Open Science Working Group and the were drafted by the Open Science Principles Drafting Committee.
We are grateful to many SFU open science champions including Gwen Bird, former Dean of Libraries, Tania Bubela, former Dean of Health Sciences, Elicia Maine, Associate Vice President of Knowledge Mobilization and Innovation, and Dugan O’Neil, Vice President, Research and International, for their support of this initiative. They represent SFU's continued commitment to sharing the products of its research and innovation.
Community Consultations
Input from the SFU community was crucial to shaping the open science and open scholarship initiative. The consultation process included engagement with faculty, staff and students to tailor the guiding principles to the needs of the SFU research community.  A series of townhalls were held in January 2024 to present the draft principles and receive feedback from the community.
