MPub Alumni Share Their Experience of Working with the Public Knowledge Project
Every year, graduates from the Master of Publishing program step into the realm of publishing with innovative ideas and a passion for spreading knowledge. Among these talented individuals are alumni who have joined forces with the (PKP), an initiative dedicated to enhancing the scholarly publishing landscape. These alumni, equipped with a unique blend of theoretical insights and practical skills, contribute to PKP鈥檚 mission by developing open access publishing software and supporting global scholarly communication. Through this collaboration, they ensure that academic research is accessible, equitable, and impactful, ultimately bridging the gap between creators of knowledge and those who seek it.
We recently chatted with two MPub alumni about the role that the MPub has played in their career and what it means to work within the PKP community. Read on to hear what they had to say!
Zoe Wake Hyde, (OMP) Coordinator
Zoe is a dedicated advocate for how open publishing and open infrastructure can increase access to and participation in knowledge creation globally. She joined PKP in 2024 as the Open Monograph Press (OMP) Coordinator to focus efforts on OMP and user communities.
鈥淭he MPub program helped launch me into an exciting, rewarding career in open academic publishing. My co-op placement led directly to a permanent position working on open infrastructure for research and education, which I have continued to pursue since graduating in 2016. In 2024, I launched my own independent press that will begin publishing titles in 2025, and which provides contract services to open infrastructure projects, including PKP. The skills, experience and network I gained through the MPub experience have been invaluable to establishing myself in my chosen field, and I am grateful for the strong foundation it provided me.鈥
鈥淧KP is a leader in providing open source, ethically-managed software that makes scholarly publishing more accessible to more people worldwide. As an advocate for knowledge justice, I am happy to be contributing to their purpose. My role at PKP is as the OMP Coordinator. I was brought in to lead efforts to evaluate and strategise around PKP鈥檚 Open Monograph Press (OMP) platform, which is used by our global community to produce and share all kinds of scholarly materials. My day-to-day work includes running user research activities to better understand the needs of those who use the platform, as well as evaluating the open book publishing ecosystem and identifying where we can best contribute to its continued growth.鈥
Alejandra Casas Ni帽o de Rivera, Communications Coordinator (Aguascalientes, Mexico)
Alejandra joined PKP in 2021 as a Publishing Support Specialist in PKP|PS, and is now Communications Coordinator. She has worked with scholarly journals and University Presses in Mexico and Latin America since 2017, where she has worked in book distribution and helped implement Open Access projects.
鈥淪FU鈥檚 MPub program helped me, among many other things, get a wider perspective of how the publishing industry works outside of Latin America, especially in Canada. The experience I gained by doing my Professional Placement in PKP shaped in many ways what today is my daily role at PKP as Communications Coordinator.鈥
鈥淚n my perspective, PKP is a community of thousands of people sharing knowledge and wanting to make a positive impact through it. As an organization, PKP is not only helping adopt Open Access publishing and its best practices by developing the world鈥檚 most widely used publishing software but also opening doors and lowering barriers for knowledge to be a more inclusive and universal public good.鈥
