Gerardo Otero was the 2021/2022 president of the Latin American Studies Association (LASA), and organized its 40th congress held virtually on May 5-8, 2022. In Fall 2024, Otero received the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences' Dean's Medal for Lifetime Achievement Award for excellence in research, teaching and service.
