Liam Goundrey: Workplace excellence in action
Kailash Srinivasan
Liam Goundrey, IT Technician, SFU Surrey Campus, has been named one of the 2024 recipients of SFU鈥檚 Workplace Excellence Award鈥攁 recognition of his ongoing work to transform the SFU experience by ensuring campus technology is always functioning smoothly.
鈥淚 was honestly surprised,鈥 Liam says about receiving the award. 鈥淚鈥檓 thankful to my colleagues and clients for nominating me. It feels great to work in a culture that appreciates the time and effort we all put in to support students, faculty and staff.鈥
Since joining SFU Surrey seven years ago, Liam has led several key audiovisual projects and has consistently gone above and beyond. His work ethic and care for his colleagues have made a lasting impact on the Surrey campus.
Liam is a team player, always prioritizing team success. Whether stepping into the role of audio-visual designer during parental leave, programming SFU Surrey鈥檚 largest lecture theatre, mentoring student technicians or co-chairing the campus health and safety committee, that sense of team is what drives him.
鈥淒uring a critical period in our department, Liam stepped up to fill the complex and difficult role of audio-visual designer while our regular designer was on paternity leave. He did so with professionalism and skill, ensuring our operations continue smoothly,鈥 says Brad Renney, Technology Coordinator.
In addition to this added responsibility, Liam led the video and control programming of the Audio-Visual system in SRYC 2600, a high-capacity lecture hall that uses Audio-Visual over Internet Protocol (AVoIP) technology for content switching and recording. Meaning, audio-visual data is transmitted over networks like LAN, WAN or the internet, replacing traditional cables. This enables remote recording and supports sending content to overflow spaces, allowing real-time access for additional attendees when a lecture theater exceeds capacity.
Mentorship is also something Liam deeply values. Having started as a student technician himself, he鈥檚 passionate about ensuring others have the same opportunity. 鈥淚 firmly believe student tech roles are key to the future of our team and the workplace philosophy we want to build. I want to invest in that.鈥
鈥淟iam deeply and personally invests in each interaction鈥攚hether with a student, staff, faculty or community member. You can always count on him to tackle the issue at hand with the full extent of his skill and effort,鈥 says Dro Bertoia, Service Desk Agent. 鈥淗e represents the very best among us. His commitment and deep investment in his work inspire me to do better every day.鈥
It鈥檚 not just the big projects that define Liam鈥檚 impact. His colleagues also often mention the many small ways he makes their work easier鈥攕taying late on a Friday to ensure sound quality for a weekend event or stepping in to help student staff during crunch time.
鈥淭he students are our biggest client group, but their schedules often fall outside of our hours,鈥 Liam explains. 鈥淚f I can take five minutes to help a student tech support their peers, I will.鈥
Every time a class runs smoothly, a staff member connects remotely, or an event goes off without a hitch, it鈥檚 often thanks to Liam鈥檚 tireless work.
鈥淟iam is customer-service driven, educates clients as he delivers services and products, and is a great human being who cares deeply about his colleagues at SFU Surrey. He鈥檚 a huge part of the campus vibe,鈥 writes Stephen Dooley, Executive Director, SFU Surrey.
Looking ahead, Liam is excited to work with the AV team to implement a standardized design for future classroom installations鈥攌eeping more work in-house and making systems easier to maintain.
Reflecting on the award, Liam credits others: 鈥淚 want to truly thank everyone who contributed to my nomination. A special thanks to Brad Renney, Dro Bertoia, the SFU Surrey IT team, and Shelley Sluggett鈥攖hank you for hiring me all those years ago.鈥
