Decades-long commitment to workplace excellence earns REM staffer a 2024 Staff Achievement Award
Computer systems administrator, Laurence Lee, is the recipient of a 2024 Staff Achievement Award in Workplace Excellence in recognition of his decades-long embodiment of excellence and responsibility.
When colleagues speak about Laurence鈥檚 contributions to the School of Resource and Environmental Management (REM), they often note his proactive and positive approach to problem solving and his consistently exceptional high quality of work.
At the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, Laurence anticipated the shift from in-person to remote before announcements were made and began work to set faculty and staff up for a successful transition. This included travelling to remote offices to set up secure and functional workplaces.
鈥淎s a result, the forced transition from working in the office to working at home during the pandemic was painless and helped me to stay effective, motivated and positive throughout this difficult time,鈥 shared a colleague.
Laurence is also known to volunteer his creative skills to REM, attending events and course trips to visually document and promote to future cohorts, contributing to the School鈥檚 ongoing success.
鈥淲e had four decades of assembled REM Alumni, and I vividly remember the loudest cheer of the night came when the MC announced Laurence鈥檚 name,鈥 shared a REM graduate student about a recent alumni event.
Day-to-day, Laurence is responsible for the maintenance of computers and servers throughout REM鈥檚 labs, offices and classrooms. When challenges arise with hardware or software, solutions are required fast to ensure there are no disruptions to teaching and research.
His calm approach to managing and problem solving across these devices and his high standards for his work mean that hiccups are few and far between and that colleagues across REM are set up for success in their roles.
鈥淢y goal is to create a supportive environment by fostering good working relationships with my peers,鈥 says Laurence. 鈥淚 believe staying calm and positive helps me stay focused on solutions, especially during more difficult situations and that a calm demeanor will be reflected by those I help.鈥
Faculty, staff and students across REM note that Laurence is not only excellent in his role, but he carries out tasks cheerfully and with a can-do attitude that makes him a pleasure to work with.
鈥淚鈥檓 motivated by the amazing people I work with, from faculty to staff to students. It鈥檚 the people who inspire me to give my best,鈥 says Laurence. 鈥淲hether it鈥檚 helping a colleague or assisting a student, I find making a positive impact in someone鈥檚 day is so rewarding. It's these meaningful connections that make my role enjoyable.鈥
