Chair's report - March Board meeting

April 15, 2025

This report contains general updates and a summary of the topics discussed during open session of the March 27 Board meeting. These reports help provide context and clarity around the progression of major projects and decisions.

You can read President Johnson鈥檚 report from the meeting here.

Provincial budget environment

At the end of February, the Board received a memo from the Crown Agencies Secretariat regarding the provincial budget environment. Due to current economic uncertainty and the implementation of U.S. tariffs, government ministries have been asked to pause hiring and implement more rigorous expenditure management controls.

While this directive only applies to core government ministries, public sector organizations鈥攊ncluding SFU鈥攈ave been asked to consider the spirit of the directive and make all efforts to pause hiring and reduce administrative and discretionary spending.

This is a challenging time for our province, but also an opportunity 尤物视频 to step up and help be part of the solution by training students for jobs of the future, accelerating homegrown innovation and managing our finances appropriately. The Board approved SFU鈥檚 2025-26 Budget and Financial Plan at our March meeting, and we are confident in the university鈥檚 ability to navigate this challenging time in a financially prudent way and in keeping with our duty to use public funds appropriately.

Changes in Board membership

I am pleased to welcome incoming members to the Board of Governors following recent elections:

  • Sam Killawee has been elected to an undergraduate student position on the Board for term of office from June 1, 2025 to May 31, 2026
  • Colin Gervais has been re-elected to a graduate student position on the Board for term of office from June 1, 2025 to May 31, 2026
  • Susan Erikson has been elected to a faculty position on the Board for term of office from June 1, 2025 to May 31, 2028

Serving as a Board member is a volunteer commitment that takes a significant amount of time and energy and I am grateful that members of the SFU community contribute to the university in this way. I also want to extend thanks to Emmanuel Adegboyega, outgoing undergraduate student representative, and Daniel Leznoff, outgoing faculty representative, for their thoughtful contributions to the Board.

In addition, Matt Vickers, Michael McDonald and Gregory Malpass have left or will be leaving their positions as Order-in-Council members as of January, June and July 2025 respectively. The Board is working with the B.C. Crown Agencies and Board Resourcing Office to identify suitable candidates and fill these vacancies.

As Michael is the current deputy Board chair, we will also be undertaking an internal election process to elect a new deputy chair according to our Board policies and procedures. Our thanks to Matt, Michael and Gregory for their many contributions to the Board and to SFU.

Responsible investments

Thank you to members of the community who continue to show interest in our conversation around responsible investments. At the March Board meeting, the Board held a discussion in Open session and welcomed several faculty speakers to share their perspectives on how SFU can further embed values into our investment approach while maintaining sustainable long-term funding that allows us to support academic and research initiatives and provide an excellent learning and teaching environment.

The Board will now consider what they have heard and the materials they have received, including feedback received through the community consultation process. The Finance, Investments and Property Committee (FIPC) will meet again next month to share their thoughts and determine next steps. This discussion will be supported by SFU鈥檚 new Vice-President, Finance and Administration, Jon Harding.

The Board wants to ensure that we are taking the appropriate time to consider all the feedback and formulate a plan of action. After next steps have been determined, a communication will be issued to the community to outline these next steps and respective timelines.

Enhancing Board transparency

As shared in a recent notice to the community, the executive team and Board are committed to enhancing transparency and engagement in decision-making at all levels of the university. In response to feedback from the SFU community, the Board Office is making several changes to its current process for sharing information related to Open Board meetings.

In addition to the Open Board agenda, leadership reports and meeting minutes, Board reports and additional supporting materials will be made publicly available on the Board of Governors website in advance of each meeting. The aforementioned materials from the March Open Board meeting have now been made available on the Board website. We hope that this will give greater transparency into Board meetings for community members who are unable to attend in person or online.

The next Board meeting will be on May 22, 2025. Community members are invited to view the open session meeting in person or via Zoom by completing a . A full schedule of upcoming meetings is available on our website.

Sincerely,

Paula Martin
