Hello! I鈥檓 Janice, a fourth year SFU student at the Beedie School of Business. From my own personal experience, I understand how both nerve-wracking and exciting it is during the first few weeks of university.

If you are currently struggling to adapt to university life or trying to regain confidence after a year of isolation, I have some tips to help you out!

Tip #1: Start a Conversation

Remember, you鈥檙e not the only person feeling a little awkward. Challenge yourself to get a conversation going with someone new every day. This can be as easy as sitting next to someone, giving a compliment or asking a question about class! Once you muster up the courage to reach out, I鈥檓 sure they will be super friendly and appreciative. Hey, you might even make a new friend!

Tip #2: Join a Student Organization

From Anime Club to Introverts Club, SFU鈥檚 got it all. The best opportunity for meeting people is student organizations because you get to do something you already enjoy doing, while climbing out of your comfort zone. Take a look at all the clubs offered at SFU and see what interests you.  I guarantee no matter what your interests are, there鈥檚 already a club for it. Make sure to attend Clubs Day to get a sense of what different clubs are about!

Tip #3: Talk to Your Neighbours

If you live in residence, your new best friend might just be down the hall. Attend residence events, sit in the common room or even shoot some hoops at the basketball courts. The more you involve yourself in the residence community, the easier it will be for you to meet people.

Remember, you won鈥檛 make friends instantly, these things take time, be patient! You鈥檝e probably heard this before but don鈥檛 worry about trying to fit in. Be your best self and you鈥檒l soon attract compatible friends.
