Biography
My doctoral research examined how countries resolve bilateral diplomatic disputes through negotiation. My recent work focused on 鈥渇rontline diplomacy鈥濃攚hat practitioners referring to work in embassies, consulates and permanent representation call 鈥渢he field鈥. For this research, I conducted dozens of interviews in Cairo, Paris, Ottawa and Geneva.
I鈥檓 currently working on the transformative impact of new communications technology on diplomatic practices. This research, funded by a SSHRC Insight Grant (2018-2022), focuses on the following questions: How do new technologies鈥攕ocial media and messaging applications in particular鈥攃hange bilateral and multilateral diplomatic practices? What are the new skills diplomats need to effectively practice diplomacy today? How do they manage tensions between traditional diplomacy centred on inter-governmental relations and new diplomacy in which there is an emphasis on public outreach and partnerships with non-state actors?
I teach mostly at the French cohort program in public and international affairs, a program at SFU where most courses are taught in French. Several of my former students from this program work today in the federal or provincial governments, as well as in business and non-profit organizations. Please see my personal website to find my teaching philosophy, publications and more information about my research.
