What path did you take after graduating from the MPP program?

I secured my current role before graduation, so my path hasn’t changed much since graduation day! I’m currently working as an EC-05 level policy analyst with Indigenous Services Canada, more specifically, First Nations and Inuit Health Branch. Every day is different and dynamic, but I typically provide policy-related support (letters, briefing notes, presentations) to a variety of teams, like the health emergency management team, nutrition advisors, nurses, and medical officers of health. I also oversee the region’s budget operational plan. I could not have secured such a unique role without the MPP experience.

Do you feel that the MPP program gave you a particular advantage? In what ways has it helped you?

Absolutely. The MPP program helped me secure this great position in a number of ways. First and foremost, the co-op component gave me crucial experience working on various tasks, like writing briefing notes, briefing executives and Ministers, engaging with Indigenous partners, as well as facilitating discussions and presentations for large groups. Secondly, the MPP courses equipped me with the essential knowledge and skills to do holistic, well-informed work. Furthermore, the varied projects completed as part of coursework helped me diversify my knowledge on different topics and expanded my horizons. Ultimately, completing my MPP degree with SFU has been incredibly rewarding, and I hope this achievement of mine can be an inspiration to some.

What are some of the highlights of your current position?

The biggest highlight of this position is that I get to work in a dynamic environment that gives me exposure to lots of interest areas, such as Indigenous policy, health, and emergency management. I also feel very fortunate to have secured a position on a team that encourages decolonial perspectives and challenging the status quo.

What advice to you have for MPP students who are just starting the program this fall?

To be excited and enthusiastic to learn new things, to be welcoming of learning curves and challenges, and to let go of expectations! I had a great MPP experience, but it was unlike any previous academic endeavor of mine, in a very rewarding way. I wish a wonderful year of learning to the new students!
