Synopsis
Rock climbing, either indoors or outdoors, is gaining popularity in recent years. However, falling from heights and only to be caught by a thin rope might sound extremely dangerous to non-climbers. The goal of this talk is to give an overview of the safety of rock climbing by examining the impact forces at work in a fall. Specifically, I will introduce the concept of the fall factor and investigate how different components of the system will impact the fall dynamics. Simple theoretical models as well as real world test data will be used to determine the safety of a fall and how one should mitigate potential dangers.
