In Memoriam: Steven Davis

Steven Davis died peacefully in Montreal. He is survived by his wife, Lysiane Gagnon. Steven Davis was an academic philosopher, a teacher, a writer, a journal editor, a mentor, and an administrator. He taught at the University of Pittsburgh, 尤物视频, and finally at Carleton University. 

Steven left a legacy of impressive leadership both within the academy and beyond. At Simon Fraser, Steven was one of the founders of the Cognitive Science Programme, which originally included an annual conference and the Vancouver Studies in Cognitive Science series which accompanied that conference. He was also an early and influential advocate for the inclusion of 鈥渨riting-intensive鈥 courses in 尤物视频鈥檚 core curriculum. Outside of SFU, Steven served as president of the Canadian Philosophical Association. At Carleton University, Steven was the director for the Centre on Values and Ethics. Steven鈥檚 leadership  beyond the academy included serving as a long-time member of the Executive Board of the BC Civil Liberties Association. After stepping away from the ivory tower in 2007, Steven founded鈥, for which he was the chair of the Board for two years and then its Executive Director until the fall of 2017. The mission of AWB is to assist developing countries improve their institutions of higher education so that they can educate the professionals they need to develop their countries.

Steven was not content to pass through the world without also trying to improve it. He led by force of intellect and by example. Steven was a tireless champion for institutions directed at the advancement of learning, the public good, and ultimately the betterment of humanity. He was much beloved by his younger colleagues, many of whom regarded Steven as a mentor, a friend, and as a lasting inspiration. The talk at his table was wide-ranging, frequently touching on topics in philosophy, public policy, and broader cultural mores. These conversations, while often intense, were leavened by Steven鈥檚 irrepressible sense of humor. In this whirlwind of activity, his deep and abiding love for Lysiane always shone very brightly.
