American Spy
Lauren Wilkinson
Random House (2019)
Our book club had mixed feelings about American Spy by Lauren Wilkinson. The letter format felt like it kept us at a distance from the story rather than pulling us in, and we struggled to understand the main character鈥檚 motivations鈥攕he didn鈥檛 seem to fully know herself. The book touched on race less than we anticipated, it felt more focused on American identity and global influence, leaving us unsure if the depiction of American imperialism was meant as a critique or simply part of the story鈥檚 backdrop. As non-American readers, we appreciated how Wilkinson captured the American mindset and the subtleties of propaganda. Though the novel didn鈥檛 do much to subvert the spy thriller genre beyond having a black woman as the protagonist, overall it was a solid read, but not one that left us blown away.
