Capitalizing on Teachers’ Mathematical Knowledge: Towards Enhanced Teaching Practice

This project will study the applicability of disciplinary “nonlocal” (i.e., teachers’ knowledge that is not directly connected to what is being taught) mathematical knowledge of teachers and teacher educators in instructional situations and investigate the implements of a narrative inquiry method in mathematics education.

Advancing Argumentation and Critical Thinking: Research Syntheses of Argument Visualization Pedagogy and Technology

B.C. First Nations Research Jurisdiction and Governance Initiative

This grant funds the Second Annual B.C. First Nations Women’s Research Jurisdiction and Governance Summit and three outreach initiatives: engaging Indigenous rightsholders to foster awareness and partnerships, establishing a “Matriarchal Leadership Circle” with graduate mentees to guide outreach and the event, and creating the “B.C. First Nations Research Infrastructure & Jurisdiction Network.”

AI in Mental Health: Empowering autistic youth with decreased sound tolerance

Kids Brain Health Network-funded researchers at SFU, Dr. Elina Birmingham and Dr. Siamak Arzanpour, are developing an AI-powered app to help autistic youth with DST manage distressing sounds. The app selectively filters noise in real time, enhancing comfort while maintaining environmental awareness.

Beyond Grades: Unpacking Student Teacher Knowledge Development in Ungraded Teacher Education

This study explores student teachers’ experiences within an ungraded semester of a teacher education program, examining personal, contextual, social, sociological, and pedagogical aspects of knowledge development for social justice education through a cohort-wide survey and in-depth interviews of student teachers enrolled in SFU’s Professional Development Program.

Indigenous Sovereignty in Elementary Curricula: Returning to First Nations Journey of Justice

This project is updating “The First Nations Journeys of Justice” curriculum documents created in 1994 by Jo-ann Archibald, Q’um Q’um Xiiem, for K-7 education by aligning it with the current BC provincial curriculum to reflect landmark justice cases in Canada that have impacted Indigenous sovereignty from 1994 to 2022.
