Equity, Diversity and Inclusion at SFU: April 2025 in Review

April 29, 2025

As we move into the summer term, work is continuing on equity, diversity and inclusion initiatives across campus. Here is a snapshot of the work underway this month.

Launch of the Institute for Black and African Diaspora Research and Engagement

On Friday, April 4, the Institute for Black and African Diaspora Research and Engagement (IBADRE) at ÓÈÎïÊÓƵ (SFU) officially launched. This gathering of visionaries, changemakers and community allies dedicated to global Black solidarity and liberation took place at a vibrant networking reception with live performances from local Black artists. It was led by co-chairs and co-directors of IBADRE, Dr. June Francis and Dr. James Busumtwi-Sam, with Dr. Malinda Smith, Vice Provost Equity Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) and Professor at the University of Calgary, delivering a profound keynote address, encouraging perseverance in the face of challenges to equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) and Anti-Black Racism Initiatives and the broader fight for justice.

The launch event was attended by scholars, activists and community leaders as well as university leaders supporting SFU’s commitment to the Scarborough Charter including Jennifer Kandjii, Director EDI, Students, Dr. Dugan O’Neil, Vice-President Research and Innovation and Dr. Yabome Gilpin-Jackson, Vice-President, People, Equity & Inclusion.

Gratitude goes to the entire IBADRE steering committee, and the Associate Director, Black Student Centre Dr. Daniel Sheriff for their work on the launch event.

Improving access to training for search committees

A Canvas course on Inclusive Excellence is now available for individuals who are members of faculty hiring committees. Developed by SFU RADIUS and the Equity Office, this training course helps meet the requirements of the SFUFA Collective Agreement for committees involved in evaluating faculty for hiring or tenure and promotions processes.
