2025 SFU Economics Teaching Awards winners: Dr. Kevin Schnepel and Jeff Hsieh

Every year, the Department of Economics recognizes its most outstanding instructors and teaching assistants for the hard work they put forward for their students. This year's Lawrence Boland Outstanding Instructor Award goes to professor Kevin Schnepel while the Terry Heap's Outstanding Teaching Assistant Award goes to doctoral student Jeff Hsieh. Congratulations! 

Lawrence Boland Outstanding Instructor Award

Named in honour of award-winning instructor and retired economics professor , the Lawrence Boland Outstanding Instructor Award recognizes the teaching achievements of continuing economics faculty.

Dr. Kevin Schnepel holds a PhD in Economics from the University of California, Santa Barbara. He joined SFU鈥檚 Department of Economics in 2018. His research focuses on the intersection of public health, social policy, and criminal justice, utilizing large administrative datasets to provide evidence-based insights for policymakers. His work aims to understand how various interventions鈥攆rom early-life health investments to criminal diversion programs鈥攃an reduce crime and enhance social welfare.

He teaches both undergraduate and graduate courses, including the capstone research project course 尤物视频鈥檚 Social Data Analytics minor. His main teaching goal is to help students understand the value of causal inference and empirical research methods in addressing key societal challenges such as crime and addiction. His teaching philosophy emphasizes the integration of real-world research findings and best practices, and he fosters collaborative, project-based learning to develop students鈥 teamwork and analytical skills. He also likes to bring his dog, Lucy, to class.

Terry Heaps Outstanding Teaching Assistant Award

The Terry Heaps Outstanding Teaching Assistant (TA) Award recognizes those who go above and beyond when it comes to supporting students and faculty. 

Jeff Hsieh earned both his BA and MA in Economics from National Tsing Hua University in Taiwan, and in 2020, he began his PhD in Economics at 尤物视频. He is also an honorary member of the Phi Tau Phi Scholastic Honour Society of the Republic of China.

As a teaching assistant, Jeff sees himself as more of a mentor and guide鈥攕omeone students can feel comfortable approaching, like a knowledgeable peer rather than a distant figure at the front of the room. He鈥檚 passionate about helping students truly understand economic concepts by focusing on the 鈥渨hy鈥 behind the methods, rather than just memorizing formulas. With extensive experience in teaching writing courses and workshops, Jeff also emphasizes the importance of clearly communicating complex ideas, especially when speaking to people outside the field. He believes that critical thinking, logical reasoning, and effective communication are essential components of undergraduate education and future professional success.

Jeff鈥檚 research focuses on consumer demand, econometrics, and machine learning. He鈥檚 especially interested in using structural models and modern, computation-intensive algorithms to analyze large datasets and explore important economic questions. Lately, he has been working on methodology that leverages household-level expenditure data to study how resources are shared within households and to address intra-household distributional issues.
