The question to ask is whether we want to prioritize the necessary actions to reduce fire hazard around communities. Do we value homes enough to fund retrofits and require new buildings to incorporate Firesmart standards? Are we prepared to be more thoughtful in the way we grow and develop our communities, to consider not only the risk of fire, but also the ability to rapidly evacuate hundreds or thousands of people? Finally, are we willing to alter our parks and nearby forests to protect our homes and communities from the impacts of catastrophic fire?
