Protocols and Practices for Indigenous and Non-Indigenous Engagement
Advancing reconciliation and an understanding of relationships with Indigenous Peoples requires knowledge of the historical and modern context of Indigenous and non-Indigenous relations in Canada. This course provides essential knowledge for anyone involved in consultation, collaboration, and engagement with Indigenous Peoples and communities. By exploring protocols and governance structures and applying consultative approaches to your engagement practices you’ll ultimately learn how to cultivate stronger community partnerships.
Note: This course replaces Shared Spaces: Foundations for Dialogue Between Indigenous and Non-Indigenous People (DLOG708). You may complete either course as part of the Dialogue and Civic Engagement Certificate.

What you will learn
After completing this course, you’ll be able to do the following:
- Analyze the historical and modern context of Indigenous and non-Indigenous relations in Canada
- Explain protocols, governance structures and collaborative approaches for engaging with Indigenous Peoples and communities
- Examine systemic effects that influence engagement practices, including benefits and barriers to collaboration
- Develop collaborative engagement practices based on knowledge of governance structures, protocols and the historical and modern context of Indigenous Peoples and communities
How you will learn and be evaluated
- Prepare to spend about 6-8 hours per week on coursework
- Expect reading and other assignments on a weekly basis
- Plan to access the course at least once every few days to keep up with your work and assignments
- No textbook is required. We will provide all course materials online.
- Live opening and closing sessions will be held on Zoom during weeks 1 and 4 (dates TBD)
