Editing student wins Editors Canada annual scholarship

June 27, 2024

Editors Canada, Canada鈥檚 national editorial association, has awarded its 2024 Claudette Upton Scholarship to Helena Ramsaroop, a student in our Editing Certificate program.

The scholarship is an annual award that recognizes a promising emerging editor. The announcement of Ramsaroop鈥檚 win was made during Editors Canada鈥檚 conference in late June, hosted at SFU鈥檚 Vancouver campus. The scholarship selection panel commended Ramsaraoop for her 鈥渢houghtful, articulate reflection on the value of empathy within editing.鈥

In her scholarship essay, Ramsaroop noted, 鈥淓ditors can encourage writers to handle sensitive topics with care, honesty, and respect, and to hold space for perspectives that differ from their own.鈥

Ramsaroop recently completed the certificate program and plans to launch a freelance editorial business that will focus on supporting and promoting BIPOC and other marginalized writers.

While orginally intent on a career in academia, Ramsaroop decided to switch to editing after taking our introductory editing course.

鈥淎fter years of feeling lost, I finally found a new career that felt like the perfect fit,鈥 she told Editors Canada. 鈥淚 completed the final course [in April 2024], and I鈥檓 happy to say that editing still feels right for me and I鈥檓 excited to begin my career.鈥
