Fresh Canadian produce year-round? Gene editing could make it possible

CBC Vancouver broadcasted a story at the 6 PM news on April 9th about research in the Mattsson lab to evolve blueberry production in Canada. Science communicator Darius Mahdavi interviewed greenhouse manager Mostafa Mirzaei who together with BeriTech Inc. has tested out induction of flowering and production of fresh berries in greenhouses over the winter in greenhouses. Juan Rodriguez Lopez showed how relevant target genes were identified by DNA sequencing and Jim Mattsson discussed the use of gene editing to mimic gene variants present in crops such as rice and tomato for precision improvement of blueberry traits.
