Calgary- Homes for Heroes Site Brief

GOAL:

The overall goal of the aging in the right place (AIRP) project is to improve the shelter and housing options to meet the unique and complex health and social needs of older persons experiencing homelessness across Canada.

ABOUT THE HOMES FOR HEROES FOUNDATION:

H4HF provides safe and inclusive temporary housing for older Veterans experiencing homelessness. The organization also provides community support intervention, a central resource center, social workers, a community garden, and other amenities. The villages for Veterans consist of 15 to 25 individual “tiny homes” which are approximately 300 square feet in size, and built with all the necessary features of a full sized home. Each community is arranged in a park-like setting, where all homes face inward to facilitate peer-to-peer support.

PROVIDER INTERVIEWS:

Staff described having good, collaborative relationships with the residents. Staff shared that increasing the number of accessible suites would meet the needs of residents with physical limitations and improve inclusivity. They also think the tiny home design promotes connection among residents who share a common cultural context, understanding and language.

ENVIRONMENTAL AUDIT:

At H4HF AIRP is demonstrated through elements of communal and structured living designed to align with housing first and harm reduction approaches to homelessness. Barriers for AIRP included accessibility and lack of space.

CLIENT INTERVIEWS:

Clients commented that the tiny home village cultivated positive relationships and a sense of community. They also shared that having access to a resource centre helped facilitate their everyday activities.
