Abstract

This presentation examines how arts-based research methods can facilitate best-practice understandings in supportive housing provision by providing a more complex and nuanced understanding of the affective dimensions of human experience from the perspective of individuals with lived experiences of homelessness. We investigated promising practices in supportive housing service and design for older adults with experiences of homelessness via qualitative arts-based interviews with 45 older adults (aged 50+) residing in four temporary shelter or housing sites identified as promising practice in Calgary, Alberta. In this presentation we introduce arts-based methods with older homeless shelter/housing residents and describe approaches for disseminating arts-based knowledge. Finally, we outline techniques designed to translating these forms of research findings to inform shelter/housing design, operations, and policy and invite attendees to generate possibilities for utilizing art-based approaches in their own housing research to inform local practices and policies.
