SFU is governed under the , which sets out a specific model and parameters for university governance. This model is called a bicameral system and consists of two governing bodies: Senate and the Board of Governors.
Composition of the Senate and Board of Governors is also set out by the University Act, ensuring that both governing bodies contain representation from major groups across the university.
Senate
Senate is responsible for the academic governance of the university, including awarding degrees and the development and evaluation of courses and programs.
Board of Governors
The Board is responsible for oversight of the university, including property, revenue and policies, as well as holding the president accountable.
